Description: 2012 promises to be an interesting year for packaging. Continuing stagnation in North America and Western Europe poses challenges to brand owners. With value and economy product offerings now commonplace in these markets, how can brand owners utilise packaging to increase their value share? Meanwhile the developing markets of Asia Pacific, Latin America and Middle East and Africa remain the driving markets for packaging unit growth. Here packaging needs to be able to offer solutions to the high population of low income consumers, whilst still leveraging the growing middle class with an increasing disposable income. Euromonitor International will examine some of the key trends driving packaging demand, relevant to directing consumer purchasing decisions. Value for money propositions remain an enduring theme in packaging development with the use of both larger economy sizes and smaller entry-level pack sizes apparent to encourage consumer take-up and repeat purchase. Functional packaging that focuses on delivering more added-value attributes is also making gains as advances are made in packaging design and dispensing closure fitments. In an increasingly competitive marketplace, the need to stand-out is also necessary whether that is in the form of seasonal, limited edition launches, eco-packaging launches or in the use of a new pack format, shelf impact will be another driver of pack innovation in 2012.

  • Global retail FMCG packaging reached 3.9 trillion units in 2011 and is expected to grow by 3% in 2012
  • Packaging that facilitates value offerings continue to resonate with consumers affected by economic uncertainly in Western Europe and North America. China continues to drive growth, accounting for 55 % of global FMCG packaging unit growth in 2011
  • 2012 could see brand owners reducing pack sizes and pack material quality to offset food inflation and keep unit prices stable in packaged food

New Zealand Consumers in 2020: A Look into the Future

New Zealand
New Zealand's economy has benefited from a stable political environment and export-oriented industrialisation, bringing steady growth and prosperity. However, in the face of a weakening economy coupled with massive rebuilding costs in the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake last March, what does the future hold for New Zealand consumers? Will they continue to cross the Tasman to Australia searching for brighter prospects?

NEW ZEALAND CONSUMERS TODAY

We're worse off than before!

According to New Zealand's leader of the opposition Phil Goff, New Zealand has not fared well under the current government. Statistics New Zealand revealed 100,000 Kiwis have left for Australia to look for work. “I want to know what John Key (the current Prime Minister of New Zealand) is going to do about rising unemployment, the rising cost of living and the ticking time bomb that is the rising number of young people not in work or training,” announced Phil Goff. Prices in the country have gone up nearly four times faster than incomes over the past three years with the rise of GST from 12.5% to 15% in December 2010 taking most of the blame. According to the Ministry of Social Development, 55,200 15 to 24-year olds are not in education, employment or training and the number of young people on long term unemployment benefit has increased by over 700%.

President Obama’s Achievements and Challenges

Obama
President Obama's historic first term is drawing to a close with elections due in November 2012. Achievements include his healthcare bill and further progress towards nuclear non-proliferation. However, Obama has struggled to improve the US economy and government finances, owing to the impact of the 2008 financial crisis, and unemployment remains high.

  • In January 2009, Obama became the first person of African-American descent to come to power, making his presidency an historic one from the onset;
  • As head of the world's largest economy (US GDP stood at US$15.1 trillion in 2011, comprising 21.4% of the world's total GDP), Obama's achievements and failures are of significant importance to the global economy;
  • Obama became President at the height of the global economic downturn. His main achievements have been the implementation of his March 2010 healthcare bill, which has benefitted consumers, and the facilitation of emergency loans to the American automotive industry in 2008. Yet the US unemployment rate has risen from 5.8% of the economically active population in 2008 to 9.0% in 2011, while public debt has risen from 71.6% of total US GDP in 2008 to 100% in 2011.
